Mic for steel

Post by Terry Miller »

Have any of you guys tried the Senhieser 609 for steel? I've been using one lately and I feel it is much smoother than a SM57. Any thoughts on this? Terry Miller

I've used one many times live and in the studio. I like 'em. For studio cabinet micing, I prefer a ribbon mic, but the 609 is a good choice.

For ribbons, Royer are still one of the studio standards, I've had good luck with the very reasonable Shiny Box series, but lately I've been using a matched pair of Cascade Fatheads, sometimes in a Mid-Side setup for a really nice adjustable stereo image. Cool mics.

I do not know what the differences are between the 609 and the e 609 silver but I have had an e 609 silver (http://www.sennheiserusa.com/profession ... 600_500074) for several months and I like it well enough. I have used it to mic an amp for a regular electric guitar and for a PSG and it seems to do well for both. I am only doing amateur recording into GarageBand so I don't have particularly tough requirements but for what I am doing I give the thing 2 thumbs up. No sound problems at all.
