steel guitar player in Marty Robbins video?

Post by Fernando Fernandez »

Many months ago I saw an old ErnestTubb/Marty Robbins video (shanachie series). It's great.
the young steel guitar player who played there with ET everybody knows who is but I can't remember who was the steel guitar player with Marty Robbins. I beleive he was playing a brown Fender stringmaster but I'm not sure.I liked a lot his playing...
Somebody knows who is he?
Thanks amigos

I don't know which video you have but I have an old one in which Carl Smiths steeler, Johnny Sibert?{spelling} was playing behind Marty on a Fender Strgmaster. Other videos, Katz Kaybayashi is playing pedal guitar.

Jimmy Farmer was Marty Robbbins steel player. I haven't seen that video for awhile, but I'm pretty sure he is in it. He had a nice style.

Bill Johnson, who is the writer of "A Wound Time Can't Erase," also played steel for Marty Robbins in the 1960's. I'm the proud owner of the 65 Emmons that Bill cut "The Shoe Goes on the Other Foot Tonight" with MR

I also have a video of Farmer backing up Marty. I don't think he thought much of it though. The music was dubbed and lip and hand synced ans when the music was high he would be low go through an entire chorus with out any bar movement and during a long gliss his bar stayed on the 3rd fret. He was a fine player however.

Yes indeed C C,

Talk about a pet peave of mine. And why? Please tell me why? Sad indeed. How could they hear the music dubbed and not know where to place the bar. Especially when they were the ones who recorded it??????

I mean if we have to resort to fakery, at least fake it GOOD! Image Image

Dang!!

Carl, Jimmy Day told me a story about the filming of those shows. He did not know that his boss at that time, Jim Reeves, was going to appear. Jimmy just happened to go by the studio and seen all the activity. The side men did get paid a pitence for these shows and a few bucks meant alot to pickers. Boots Harris was playing a stringmaster and he was going through the motions with Tubb. When Reeves was introduced Harris moved over and let Jimmy fake it on his steel. The problem was however that the prerecording of the music had Sonny Burnett playing a pedal guitar. Jimmy said you should have seen all the bar twisting I did to try to match those sounds. I have the video an Jimmy is really getting with it. CC
