Whats this 6 string lap steel tuning?

Post by Mark Davis »

What would this 6 string non pedal tuning be what chord?

From Low to high

B D E G# B E

I saw it written in masking tape on a steel for sale and was wondering what chord it would be. Also seems like a good one since I play in open E alot the last 3 strings G#BE could all stay the same. I saw an E13th tuning that was sorta similar but not really sure what this one would be E6th? or E7th?

John is correct.

This E7th tuning was one of 3 tunings that were the most popular of many tunings that followed the evolution of the Hawaiian guitar after it was invented.

The other 2 were A major with low bass. And C#minor.

E
C#
A
E
A
E

E
C#
G#
E
C#
G#

From these 3, most tunings evoloved into a myriad of over 100 tunings today. Even our beloved PSG!

But of all the tunings ever devised, NONE had the impact among steel players as the one Jerry Byrd invented in the 40's. And that of course is C6.

E
C
A
G
E
C

And in the hands of the master (JB), it can do it all. (Lapsteel of course). On pedal steel, NO tuning ever deivised can do what E9th can. But when you analyze it, it contains "the 3 most popular tunings ever......." Image Image

God bless JB and all of you,

Hey Mark,
Check out my post about a Different Dobro tuning. I use your tuning a lot on lap steel and Dobro. You can retune 2 strings and get a G6th. Just tune your 1st string down to D and your 3rd string to G and you've got another great tuning which you can play western swing, Hawaiian, or bluegrass stuff with ease. It's like this low to high: B D E G B D
