Is Cashdollar video ok for 6-string lap?

Post by Brent Graves »

I am preparing to get into lap steel guitar. I will probably get a 6-string, since there are a lot of them available. In the description of Cindy Cashdollars lap steel instructional videos, they are said to be for 8-string lap steel. Will I run into problems trying to learn from these videos if I have a 6-string? Thanks.

I've owned both, and you won't have any problems. Most playing is done on the top six strings.

The Cashdollar video is ok for either 6 or 8; but for me it was only of value to learn a couple of tunes, which could just have easily been done through tabulature. The parts on technique are generally weak and if I remember right there's nothing on blocking at all.

I agree, I didn't get much out of either video. Unfortunately I don't have any video to recommend. My recommendation is for you to find someone that knows how to play lap style and get some basic technique tips from them. If you want to play in C6, DeWitt Scott's book and CD (Mel Bay) might be helpful to you (it was for me)

Herb Remington has two videos out that cover more technical aspects. I can really recommend these.

Jerry Byrd's video is real good for left hand technique, including bar slants.

Where is a good place to buy the books and videos recommended above? Also, where is a good place to buy a steel, strings, picks, etc.
Thanks, Brent

Check out B0b's "Links" at the top of this page and follow to "steel vendors". Scotty's music ought to have much of it ( http://www.scottysmusic.com/ ).
