Modern tone on old steel?

Post by Tony Harris »

I have an old Commodore 6-string on legs (copy of a Fender?. I'd like to get a tone more like a modern pedal steel, brighter and cleaner, rather than the 50's non-pedal tone. Any suggestions for replacement pickups? - the spacing is the same as a regular guitar. Or don't you agree there is a difference?
Thanks,
Tony Harris.

A lot of pedal steels use humbucking pickups, which may be what you're looking for.
You need to measure the size of your pickup and see if there is a humbucker made that will fit your guitar, unless you want to rout it.Seymour Duncan, for one,has measurements on his website.
You could probably get a pickup maker to make you one to size,as well.
I don't know enough about humbuckers made for pedal steels to be able to recommend a standard guitar 'bucker.
You could ask in the Electronics folder, too.
