I once played a metal-boy-model in a music store and for it's price it sounded o.k. The workmanship was a bit poor, though.
I'd never order a guitar from a catalogue IMHO. I believe that some instrument speak to you and some don't, even it's different copys of the same guitar.
Same reccommend as above. Bodies are usually decent, necks are anybodies guess and fretwork is poor. National cone is a big improvement, as would a bone nut.

for a guy whose messed with some of them. If I remember right he likes the Dean singlecone's for it's higher quality.
when I was looking for a 'dobro' clone a while back I must have played 20 or 30 different instruments in a dozen guitar shops and the best I found (also the cheapest!) was a Johnson. Its really loud and has a great tone. Maybe I just hit lucky - its the only Johnson I've ever actually played so I can't vouch for general output - just this one.
I have just got a flithill with a custom set-up from Paul Beard.
(I needed a practice guitar that wouldn't end in tears if I dropped it)
It's an excellent beast and although it hasn't got the depth of my Guernsey custom it is very playable.
Price similar to a Johnson too.
Contact Paul -- he is a great fellow to deal with and he cares about his guitars too!!
Johnson guotars are made in china. The bodys are of brass siver plated. They are OK. The bodys are wavey in the metel work. The one I have in stock is a round neck and sounds verry bluesey Retail is $895 but could be had for 1/2 that if some one is interested and is new. I am not trying to use the forem to sell but the flinthill and johnson guitars can be bought verry reasonal. We sell lots of the flinthill square necks. Remember all these are made oversees so the price is low and the quality isnt the best but it can be replaced if stolen or distroyed where your original Dobro can not be.
I've had a Johnson square neck for about a year now. I was impressed for the price. Loud and good tone. It does lose some sustain as you move up the neck. I may have received a good one. I can't find any flaws on this one. I bought from first quality music out of Louisville.
