More Joaquin and Noel Available

Post by Herb Steiner »

I picked up an interesting CD the other day, entitled "Spade Cooley 1941-1947," on the very wonderful Country Routes label (I pretty much love everything this label puts out). This one is cool because it features Spade and Tex when they were sidemen for Cal Shrum's Band, in 1941. This band featured the most excellent acoustic lead guitar of Gene Haas, and the CD has cuts of this band I had never heard before.

There are 34 (!) tracks on this CD! The first 12 cuts are of this band, and then 10 cuts of Spade's classic band with Tex, Smokey, Deuce, JM, Bamby/DePaul, Cactus, etc. Then 12 cuts of Spade's band with Noel Boggs, Jimmy Wyble, Cameron Hill, Jimmy Widener, Billy Hill and those guys.

What is neat is that these are radio transcriptions and not the original Columbia and RCA recordings, so the arrangements feel different and somehow more spontaneous, like a live performance. The performances were originally used in small recorded segments to create radio programs.

There is an excellent "Boggs Boogie" that is different from the recorded version, also a very cool "Diggin' With Spade" that Cameron Hill wrote when he lived in Houston, a very fine "Three Way Boogie" with Joaquin/Smilin' Johnny/Smokey, and just a lot of way cool and obscure stuff for Spadeologists like myself.

Anyway, the number is Country Routes RFD CD 23.

I got it at Waterloo Records here in Austin. any major chain like Tower or Virgin would have it I'm sure. Try Amazon.com, in fact.
