Joaquin Murphey's solo on Columbus Stockade

Post by Andy Volk »

Here's my attempt to tab out Joaquin Murphey's incredible solo on columbus Stockade recorded in 1946 with Andy Parker and the Plainsmen in Hollywood. Thanks to Herb Steiner for posting it at:
http://herbsteinermusic.com/generic20.html

Also thanks to Jon Light for doing a reduced-speed version. Some of the bass notes are fudged here as Joaquin was using a 8-string but I didn't wanted to bother getting my 8-string out so just re-interpreted them for 6-string. This is the first solo up to the accordion break. Joaquin's 2nd solo sounds like it's on the E13th neck (not tabbed).

Thanks Andy for tabbing this out, it's a cool solo. As I was going through the tab I noticed that there are a few things that I don't think are correct, so I'm posting my edited version of your tab, if you don't mind. Image

Any further corrections are welcome, especially for the last bit with the chords. I'm not sure exactly what notes are being played there. Also, the recording seems to be in F# (albeit a sharp F#), but I've kept it in G. There are no bar lines, but I've given the timing for the pickup notes, and the chord names are roughly at the place where the chord changes. Any help with filling out the chord changes would be good, too, as I've kept the chords very simple. There may be a few extra chords in there that I've missed.

Oh yeah, and I didn't hear any notes that couldn't be played on a 6-string C6... Image
