Slow-Downer with iTunes

Post by Ken Pippus »

The website says ASD won’t work with streaming sources. As a hopeless dinosaur, I have a fairly huge library downloaded on iTunes. I know historically, ASD also didn’t work on files from that source. Having tried the free version of ASD, it looks like it still doesn’t support iTunes.

Any information to the contrary, or suggestions of other software which might actually work on Apple products?

I've never used iTunes. I use VLC media player on every platform I use - windoze, linux, android, iOS, etc. For me, the Swiss Army Knife of media players. Slows down, speeds up, loops, handles any media I've ever thrown at it, whatever.

Here's the link for iOS at the apple store - https://apps.apple.com/us/app/vlc-media ... d650377962

More info here, which also has the link to the apple store - https://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-ios.html

Dave, will the VLC media player change the key of the song? Working with a vocalist, that is a "key" feature of the ASG for me.

I usually video screen shot a song on my phone from any app, then airdrop it onto my airpad or computer and import it into the Amazing Slow Downer. Works every time, and you can pull a song from anywhere.

Right now I'm using VLC 3.0.17.4 Vetinari for windoze. And yes, it can go up or down 12 semitones to the nearest 0.1 semitone if desired. Not sure off the top of my head about older versions or other platforms, but I think the same basic functionality exists for versions that are not real old.

Method 1:
In the menu, go to Tools => Effects and Filters => Audio Effects Tab => Advanced. Check Enable, and there's a slider to adjust pitch up or down 12 semitones. That changes the pitch without changing the tempo.

To change the tempo, there's a slow-down and speed-up button on the interface. If it's not there by default, go to Tools => Customize Interface to add them. They look like << (slow down) and >> (speed up).

Method 2
There is another way to do pitch changes more permanently. Go to Tools => Preferences and select the "All" radio button in "Show Settings". Then in the Audio Preferences, click Filters and check the Pitch Shifter check-box. Now open up the Filters - Audio pitch changer is at the top. There are 4 boxes, including Pitch Shift in semitones, which can be selected to the nearest 0.01 semitones. Click Save and exit VLC. Now everything will be pitch shifted by that amount when you reopen VLC.

I find Method 1 more useful because it can be changed on-the-fly while playing an audio or video file.

Thanks so much, Dave. Interesting that they don't tout that feature in their descriptions of the app. Makes it well worth a try for me.

I like Transcribe+ just fine for slowing down parts to learn / changing keys. I think it was $15.
