Hi Paul:

I just learned of this recording a week ago. Doug Boggs, our drummer from Gene's band back then told me about it. He had recently found it and sent it to me. Neither of us were previously aware of it or had even known it had been recorded live back then. I don't believe any of us knew it was being recorded. The mix is a bit weird in places but it's still pretty cool.

The band consisted of Gene, Larry Booth on bass, Doug Boggs on drums, Joe Eddie Gough on piano, Norm Cass on rhythm guitar, Danny Rainwater on lead-guitar and myself on steel. Danny and I do all the twin parts throughout and we even had a few triple parts with Norm playing 2nd part to Danny and me playing the 3rd part.

Back then I would have probably been playing my '78, black, D-10 Emmons Original through an Evans FET 500 HV or a Session 400.

Thanks for your kind words about The Farewell Party Band. I hope you're well.

I saw this band back in the mid-80s when my band opened for Gene at the Silver Dollar, a huge country dance hall now long gone in Austin TX history. It was there that I reconnected with Larry and IIRC Tony Booth (Tony on tic-tac) from my LA days, and met my now long-time steel pal Tiny O!

They were a great band to listen to, watch, and hang with on the breaks. One of Gene's best bands.
My rig: Infinity and Telonics.

Son, we live in a world with walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with steel guitars. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinberg?

Mike Bourque now plays steel with Gene Watson and the Farewell Party Band, playing an Emmons ReSound '65. Boo Miller was in the band for two years
