Fingerpick concept?

Post by John McClung »

I stumbled onto a fascinating video on the Tiny Desk YouTube channel today, featuring the Portuguese guitar artistry of Marta Pereira da Costa. I was mesmerized by the guitar: its 12 strings are tuned by machines much like a keyless pedal steel, and another instructional video demoed how its played, and the thumbpick and fingerpick that swing both ways in upstroke and downstrokes. I wonder if an adaptation to a steel guitar fingerpick has any merit?

Hey professor twang! Long time!

Your description of the 2 direction picks reminded me of my college days, when a friend let try his sitar. The picks were constructed of wound wire, going around the finger, and forming a triangle shaped point over the finger tip... allowing picking in both directions.....

That experience has stayed with me, and I often wonder how they would do on a PSG?

I have heard that some psg players have used finger picks only on their middle and ring fingers, using a guitar pick with their thumb and index fingers ... I would suppose the guitar pick would also allow for bi-directional picking, if the picker so desired.

It's interesting ............ Pat
