Dickey Overby

Post by Joe Bill Moad »

Buckaroos and Buckerettes:

I been sitting here tonight around the fireplace and listening to my favorite songs (Amber and Dickey Overby)while watching it storm outside in Oklahoma. I am not trying to get anyone fired up or trying to start a debate but in my most honest observation Dickey Overbys style is what I think was the best steel player that plays my style of traditional Country music. I don’t listen to top 40 ever since traditional Country music was the algorithm on the radio every day. Now all the Nashville (Pop) is nothing like what I was raised on. If you haven’t heard Dickey and the way he milked every note beyond comparison in my
opinion. Franklin is nothing like the late Texas picker Dickey Overby. Haven’t been on here in a long time. I come and go as I Waltz through these uncertain times we are in.

May everyone have a great Summer

I agree. He's always been one of my favorite players. You should try to find Ronnie Milsap live album. It's probably on YouTube. Dicky was the steel player. No, I don't hear anything even close coming out of Nashville today. The Texas guys, like Justin Trevino, Darrell McCall, etc... are producing great traditional country music. I listen to Pandora - Darrell McCall and Leona Williams channel more than anything else.

I agree! When I first heard him some years ago, I thought he was one of these “young cats” doing really innovative stuff. He gives me hope that we old cats can be innovative too.
Franklin D10 8&5, Excel D10 8&5. Both amazing guitars! Homemade buffer/overdrive with tone and adjustable 700Hz "Fender" scoop., Moyo pedal, GT-001 effects, 2x BAM200 for stereo or spare. BW1501 in closed back wedge. Also NV400 etc. etc...

Dickie was outstanding on that first Ronnie Milsap Live' album.

Imagine this! Living in London as I did then, and long before I knew what a steel guitar was, I was lucky enough to hear two absolute master-players live and in person.

First was Jay Dee Maness with Buck Owens at the Palladium in 1969, second was Dickie O playing with Milsap as the support act for Glen Campbell in 1972. Again, coincidentally, at the London Palladium. Both men left a mark on me and both - although it meant nothing to me then - were playing an Emmons guitar.
Roger Rettig: Emmons D10, B-bender Teles, Martins, and a Gibson Super 400!

I was in awe of so many of the early players Emmons, Lloyd Green, Curly Chalker, Herby Wallace, Stu Bassore, Hal Rugg, Jernigan and more. Dicky came to Scottys ISGC and I immediately became a fan. Loved his work with Milsap. Paul Franklin is a monster player and can handle anything thrown his way. I don't care for modern radio and use Pandora plus the Steelradio.org for my streaming. Paul has done some incredible work on so many hits you have to be tone deaf not to recognize his contribution to steel guitar and traditional country.

My one regret about steel, is that I never got to see Dicky play live, I listen to all the stuff with Dicky and Amber on YouTube. First time I heard him I was totally awestruck, I posted on forum how great his playing was and a few days later I recieved a personal message from him thanking me profusely for my comments. He was a very humble man, and I treasure that he took time out to message me.
There are some great players out there, Mike Johnson, Paul Franklin, Tommy Detamore, John Hughey, my dear friend Mitchell Smithey, who all play or played fantastic steel, all have their own styles, but capable of creating and playing in various styles, but I think in Texas Honky tonk, Dicky has got to be right at the top of that style.
Watch out for Young Caleb Lindley Amber’s step son, close your eyes and you can hear a lot of Dicky in him.

I love Dickey Overby's playing!
Amber Digby.
Did anyone notice the difference between her records and those that are recorded here in Nashville in the past few decades?
The way the guys play fills on Amber's records supports the singer and give the music a feeling of....how can I put it????
It feels like everything is moving. Like a train or one of those independently owned 18 wheelers with all those lights rolling down an open highway.
Records in Nashville are missing that feel and much of what we hear now is a substitute for music.
We're working on that.

I'm pretty sure that Tommy Detamore is the steel player on this album. It's a great record. Amy is a wonderful singer.

Yes he is. He doesn't sound like Dicky, and Dicky didn't sound like Tommy either. Both great players. There's some good new players coming up in the Texas music scene too. Steel guitar seems to remain a vital part of the popular music there. I wish I lived there and could see those bands in person. Fiddles remain popular too. I see Texas bands that don't have a lead guitar player, and I see Nashville bands that have multiple guitars, but no steel or fiddle. The popular Nashville stars can sell out a concert venue at very high ticket prices. I guess country music is producing more revenue than it ever has. Funny how things change.

IMO, Dickey and Jimmy Day plays with more heart and soul than most of us could ever imagine! My opinion only, either one could melt a heart.
