Anyone that can measure or sell a green Fender felt backing?

Post by Matthew Lutton »

Hi there friends,

I am new here and my name is Matt Lutton and I live in Indianapolis, IN 46250 (Castleton area). I’ve recently gotten very interested in lap and pedal steels. So far, I have a Champion (mother of toilet seat), a champ, a ‘48-50 RickenbaCHer B6 and a few more on the way. Think two Gibson BR-9s I accidentally bought at the same time on eBay, but cheap so no worries. I have one of the 70s ago-bud Fender S-10 models on the way, that’ll be interesting, all black.

I recently bought a 46/47 Princeton lap steel. They said the pickup output was weak, so if anyone knows what’s best to do there (I know Fralin, etc but would prefer a more affordable alternative if one exists). The guy said he thinks it’s just degaussed

The big question for you all though is about the felt pad on the back. I’ve read many solutions and even bought some pool table felt, but I do not have any idea what the dimensions are - I guess as I’m thinking about it now, it’ll be obvious from the missing spot once I have it in hand. But regardless, for anyone’s sake here, does anyone have a good source for material, or better yet, an original they’d want to sell? Or if anyone knows the basic measurements or has a template that would be sweet but again it should be pretty clear based on the back of the guitar.

I asked if the finish on the back was original and was told yes, but it looks a bit lighter than the top, almost stripped but let me know your thoughts! Also, if you are wanting to unload any duplicates, particularly Fender lap steels (would love a lake placid blue!) or any others, feel free to let me know. I buy and sell but end up buying a bit more than selling… Gibson and Rick lap steels as well as Supro, Harmony, anything cool may be of interest.

I have a reverb shop called Matt’s Gear Collecting Dust but am not here to advertise. I will need help as I continue to learn about lap steels. I can play a bit in C6 but haven’t tried open tunings and am excited about all the options.

I’m also big into vintage and Adirondack topped flattops, and anything vintage Fender, but aren’t we all? I recently found a pre CBS AB764 I’ll be re-capping (I do some repair work and am learning more) Bandmaster piggyback AND a Weissenborn Style 1 (side cracks) from Goodwill.

Nice to meet you all, and I look forward to learning from y’all!

I got the felt today, and it’ll be perfect once the Princeton arrives. No help needed unless someone has an original felt pad for sale at any point.
