Great photo Andy & Jim -

Looks like Two 'Custom XV's' on the floor

A 'Studio' upper left and 'Imperial' back right

Somewhat off topic, but did you know that Standel also had a line of guitars? Here's my Standel archtop made by Sam Koontz - terrific instrument...

That address must have been the old Standel building which was across the street from the new building they build on Santa Anita Ave. When I started working there in 1971 they were already in the new building. We were still building Standel amps, along with Randall and Gibson amps. I remember we still had three of the early amps that Robert Crooks built in his garage in the 50s. They we just in the corner of the service department collecting dust. The good old days.

I had a Studio model when I first started working the road. It just wasn’t powerful enough to get out there; but! I have wished many times over that I still had that amp-the tone!

That model of Custom XV is the one you want… Germanium transistors in both the pre and power sections. Danny McKinney told me they were made from late 64 til sometime in 66. He also said he had a letter that Pete sent to Bob at some point, thanking him for making such a great amp. In the letter he listed all the hit songs that he used it on. I guess it was a pretty long list!

I think they all the preamps are the same, but the Custom had a different tone stack (w/ contour!) and larger germanium output. i think it had a quad set and the studio only has a pair. check out this germanium preamp prototype i made! sounds just like my studio xv. playlist has 4 sound demos!
