Roots of Sacred Steel - Elder Anderson Johnson

Post by Del Ray Grace »

The Music Maker Relief Foundation, a 501c3 non-profit, was founded to preserve the musical traditions of the South by directly supporting the musicians who make it, ensuring their voices will not be silenced by poverty and time. Music Maker will give future generations access to their heritage through documentation and performance programs that build knowledge and appreciation of America’s musical traditions.

Elder Anderson Johnson officially became a Music Maker artist in 1996. Music Maker provided him with a monthly stipend for prescription medicine, and helped fixed the roof on his home. He is featured in the 2004 publication Music Makers: Portraits and Songs from the Roots of America

Thanks for sharing that, Del. I was not aware of Anderson or the MMRF, but became a subscriber to day and look forward to hearing more.

Hello John, Elder Anderson Johnson is one of several African American Hawaiian steel guitar players that have no connection to the sacred steel community. Out of curiosity I decided to research his body of work and I'm so glad I did. A book was released in 2020 about his life, interesting read.
