Does anyone use a Tascam DA-38 recorder that I could get some info about? Greatly appreciated.

Hey, Mikey, I used them for years before making the transition to ProTools. Still have 3 or 4 around the studio. let me know if I can be of any help, they were workhorses on hundreds of sessions for me.

Having been brought up on reel-to-reel, I used two of the two-channel machines for a while, to mix down from my Tascam 388 Studio 8 r-t-r Portastudios as an alternative to 2-channel rtr. I also used the Fostex 8-channel variant to back up my 388 recordings. But I was never happy with the idea of using tape in cassettes. Apart from the fact that they could stretch or break, to find the location of the recording that you wanted to work on required that you do a lot of rewinding and fast-forwarding, all of which wears on the tape.
Ultimately I went over to Data MD Minidisks, and I have seven Yamaha MD8, which record 8 channels on to minidisks. The advantage is that I can slip disks in and out and keep different projects on different disks, and finding tracks is very easy. It's a shame that they never came out with 16 and 24 channel versions before everyone gave up on Minidisks. I have a Tascam 24-channel hard disk recorder, but I hardly ever use it.

I guess I'm a dinosaur to the young technologically-minded generation, but they have plenty of cash to spend, whereas I'm retired, and the out-of-date facilities that I have now, people would have killed for back in the 50s, when we just all stood round one microphone with an old Ferrograph or Levers-Rich mono. machine.
