eqalizing the volume

Post by Kenny Yates »

Since apple has introduced iCloud, I have been playing more of of my music and I noticed that one song will be really loud and the next the volume will be down etc. Anyone know of a good software that will equalize the whole hard drive for volume
Thanks Ken

I don't know of anything that will do it for all the songs on a drive. But, there are many programs that will "equalize" the volume to a certain level one song at a time.

The free Audacity recording program has the Equalize function. http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

If you're using iTunes and/or an iPod, you can go into preferences and turn on Sound Check. It's supposed to do that exact thing.

Yeah that works pretty good and does make a pretty big difference.

That's called normalizing. MP3 Doctor is a program that will normalize entire folders of music.

I have a program called Mp3 gain that is supposed to equalize all files you select, even entire folders. But when I play them back in my Zune, there is still quite a bit of difference even though the program shows that the final output level of all the songs is within a half db or so.

I will check out Mp3 Doctor.

The one thing I don't like about Mp3 equalizer programs I have tried, is they only work on Mp3's. I have quite a few songs I purchased from Itunes and are Mp4 and other songs that are wav files. That requires me to convert them to Mp3 first. Is there any program that can equalize all types of audio files (including .ogg files)?

Fortunately on my computer, when listening to music files (and video), I use a free DJ program called Virtual DJ and it equalizes all song at the time of playback perfectly. It even allows mixing audio files and video files in the same playlist and equalizes everything.
Carter D10 8p/7k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup, Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112, Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open G slide and regular G tuning guitar) .

Playing for 55 years and still counting.

Bryan is correct. In iTunes, go to Playback Preferences and check the Sound Check option. This normalizes all your mp3 files to the same max level output.
