i was thinking about buying the us 1641 my ? is can you use it with pro tools on a pc xp or will it run on other software thanks Gary.

Pro tools only works with Digidesign hardware.
You can use M-audio interfaces with Pro tools M-Powered
There's tons of that stuff out there used and at descent prices.

Gary,

I've been using the Tascam US1641 as an interface for our backing tracks in our band (duo) and it's worked flawlessly for over a year. I use Sonar Producer Edition with it.

When purchasing a Tascam US1641, Steinberg Cubase LE4 comes packaged with it. That should be every bit as good as Pro Tools, just have to get through the learning curve with it.
