Roland CD-2e SD and CD Recorder

Has anyone tried this device yet? Looks really easy to use, almost like an old cassette recorder. I like that it has built in mics and speakers.

reading the specs and seeing the price, $599.00 , I am not sure what the market would be.

What would the market be ?

People who value simple usability? I'll admit that it's pricey, but is there another single device that does the same thing for less?

simple usability ? Uhhmm...

You mean like one of those $199 Stereo MP3/Wave hand held recorders with built in mics ? ( Zoom H-2)

To me they serve the same audience and are probably just as easy to use, no, easier, you don't have to carry around a bunch of blank CD's , and they are half the size , even smaller, and fit in your pocket. But I would agree the Zoom H2 is much easier to loose !

I guess I am still wondering what the overall benefit of recording LIVE direct to CD would be. I guess the final overall audio quality can be touted as better, but at the end of the day it's back to how good the mics are anyway, and how good can they REALLY be as part of a packaged piece of plastic ?

I guess if you want to record your practice ,a gig or a show , and MUST listen to it in the CAR on the CD player on the way home ,this is the answer. Or if you want to just bypass the entire USB/PC CD Burn thing, then , ok, this is it.

Sounds like Roland had an Engineering/Marketing/MGT meeting and some Mgr said, hey we have an extra million to blow on Product Development, anyone have any good idea's ?

I have a Zoom H-2, and the lack of speakers is a real pain. Also, you have to hook it up to a computer to burn a CD.

bob, is this CD unit something that you would have a use for ?

I totally know about the small units and the CD burning etc...no speakers etc...I have TWO of them

I don't always burn a CD', sometimes I just transfer to my $36 MP3 player .

At $600, no, I don't think it's something I'd have a use for. Maybe at $300.

This is a great idea to me except it's about 5 years to late. Back a few years ago I would have loved to have something like this to record live music directly to CD but now with all of the other recorders available for abouit 1/3 the price it doesn't look as good to me.

This is very old technonogy and I think they would have been way ahead of the game if this had been a DVD or hard drive unit rather than CD. CD recording is on the same route as the old floppy discs were in the 90's. There will always be someone that will use them but the usefulness is waning.

I can't believe a company as big and on the cutting edge like Roland would bring this out now. I'm not saying I wouldn't like to have one but to me it is way over priced but who knows they might sell millions of these. They evidently have something in mind for them. Roland is way to savvy not to have plan and I'm guessing they are going for the technically challenged folks that don't want to learn the newer technology.

But Bob this has been an interesting thread

it seems we all have an opinion and don't mind sharing it do we

Well bob, it sounds like we have a similar gadget concept. When I see a gadget, if the price is reasonable I find a purpose, or invent a purpose for it ! IF this was the price of the small MP3/Wave do-dads I would probably get one and use it for mastering CD projects instead of the PC. but not at $600...
