Gil, I have used my Profex with the Sasser setting into the power amp in and got a reasonable tone. I noticed on his Profex setting the mid frequency was at 1000 instead of the typical 800. Try that and adjust the mid to taste. When I go into the front my mids are around the 800 and I use a boss EQ in the effects loop with some mid cuts.

Good news that Chance is upgrading these Limited 400 amps.

I was under the impression that no decent electronic components were available for these amps any longer. Good to know that is not the case.

Also interesting info concerning the cabinet construction from Joe.

The thicker construction might also be a reason they got heavier

I'm not smart enough to know why, but I have two 12" cabinets with 1203-4 drivers. One is my pine construction of the same dimensions and build as the other which is plywood, I believe. My cabinet does not have the same sound as the other. I've even swapped the speakers around A/B and it's obvious it's the cabinet that affects the difference.

Yeah Jerry, that cabinet deal that Joe related is crazy, makes you wonder if Peavey ever even tested it with steel before they put it on the market. The amp itself is pretty solid, the speaker itself is a good speaker, the cabinet itself is well built, but the combination of the three just doesn't work. After experimenting with feeding the head into different cabs, the best being a 2-12 Randall RD2000,I've found a solution that's working for me. I converted it into a closed back cabinet with a carpeted piece of plywood. As If it wasn't heavy enough already! But it sounds great with my GFI, and with keyboard, AND with acoustic guitars. Needless to say, even with casters, it's not leaving our practice studio anytime soon.

On a side note, has anyone ever seen one of these?

Session 400

I had the 2x12 version of this amp. It sounded like trash. So I sold it. Then figured out how to mod it and could kick myself. I’ve got two Session 400 limiteds in my shop right now. Will post comparisons on my you tube channel before too long. I will update with the link at a later time

When I play out I use two LTD 400's ( I have 3). I use to use two Session 400's but space and weight made me go to the LTD's. Still heavy at my age but okay. For over 25 years I have been using a Session 400 LTd for my practice amp. I didn't like it at first so I bought chips or whatever from Ken Fox and it was improved greatly. I really can't hear much difference between the amps I use on stage and the Session 400 LTD. It has the 1501 Black Widow. I will list the settings for those who might want to try them.

Pre gain 4
Low 9
Mid 4
Shift 5
High 6
Presence 4
Reverb 6

I have a lot of amps and I think this one that sits about 2 feet behind me at ear level sounds great. I would use something else otherwise. I also have a Nashville 112 which I don't like very much and if I remember correctly I put Ken Fox chips in it. I think it needs a better speaker and I am going to put a 12 inch JBl in soon to see if it will make a difference. I know it will be heavier but not leaving the basement so okay. I have tried several settings, Emmons, Jory, and others and still don't like it.

By the way my Session 400 Ltd has the gray strip. Sounds good to me and I am picky.
