Question for Mr. Emmons Re: Carter S-12

Mr. Emmons,

Thank you in advance for your time. I was wondering the "how, and why" you came up with your setup on the Black Carter S-12 posted on the website? Any other comments on the guitar are appreciated. Have a great day sir!

John, I am sure that ANY comments that BE would care to make would be welcome to all of us. I too saw that E6-E13 tuning he had on his Carter black S12., on Ernie's Website. It looks to me like a Great S12 tuning! I call it the "Real Universal"...al

Yes it is.

The C# on the 5th and the 10th strings makes a lot of sense, although I have not tried it yet.

Since I have Day setup, I get the C# on the 5th string with my C pedal and with the A pedal as well. I'm planning on adding an additional C# to the 10th string with the C pedal when I send my Sierra back to the factory for some setup and repairs. (Neil's suggestion).

His setup actually looks pretty cool. But with the his A pedal (my C pedal) down you sure have a lot of C#s. I still may try it anyway.

That is the beauty of the U-12's - room to experiment with tunings a bit more.

I don't know what tuneing you guys are referring to, but here is the one I have used on S-12 for the last 40 years. <pre>

E </pre>The middle 8 was the tuning I used years ago before pedals and it has served me well. Just about everything is there for western swing, jazz as well as commercial pedals. You may think it's odd, maybe not, but it works for me. You don't have to lock it in like you do the standard universal.

Hey Jerry, That is a good tuning, but you would get a E diminished, if you put one of those Left knee lever on the right, and on of those Right knee levers on the left...al

Al, you are certianly right. I have 2 more on the floor that didn't get listed (no fault of b0bs) that not only gives me that chord but several others. I've used it that way for so long that I'm not sure I could get used to it. You know how set in our ways old men are. 3 weeks ago I put on the standard universal, went to a swing convention 2 weeks later where I crashed and burned. So as of this week I'm going back to what I've used for so long. I'm not good but I'm at ease with it.
Thanks for telling me though, I had never seen that combination.

Hi Jerry, that is the way I have done it. Always go back to good old E6, been playing it off and on for about 59 years. I have played the A6, Bb6,the B6,the D6, The C6th, the E9 and always go back to E6 Now with 12 stings , I can play E9 too.
The only differnce between what I have used
on my Carter S12 with 8/8, and what

BE is experiminting with on his Carter S12, he is using the F# on his 8th string and I dont put that in , instead I Put and E on the bottom. I didnt want to interfere whith my grips for the 6th side. But maybe I should use the F# and drop the E. But Kinda like that low E. That would be perfect for a 13 string guitar. ?
You Younger guys ought to take a close look at BE exp. S12 tuneing as it is all There..al

I would like to see Mr. E give a pedal-by pedal rundown as to what he is doing - both in E13th and "B6". I laid it out in C and I really haven't got a handle on it at all. He knows what he's doing - don't you think?

As I understand it, the tuning is geared towards maximizing contrary motion.
