Grammy Awards for Country? WHAT Country??

Post by Smiley Roberts »

From the Nashville "Tennessean" 1/20/05
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Country will rock out at the Grammys
The Grammys will include more country stars on its annual awards show than ever, but most won't be singing country music.
The Feb. 13 CBS extravaganza tentatively is set to include a six-song tribute to Southern rock, and big country stars will sing the songs with Lynyrd Skynyrd as the backing band, several Music Row publicists confirmed yesterday.
Tim McGraw and current Skynyrd lead singer Johnny Van Zant, for instance, will team up for Sweet Home Alabama. Turn it up! Gretchen Wilson and Johnny will sing Freebird.
But it won't all be Skynyrd songs, the publicists say. Preliminary plans call for Keith Urban, for instance, to sing 1976 hit Fooled Around and Fell in Love with original artist Elvin Bishop, now in his 60s.
Does this mean there won't be any country music on the show? Au contraire, my hillbilly music-loving friends.
The Recording Academy is expected to make an announcement today about a major country singer performing a major country hit at the Staples Center in L.A.
Stay tuned.
Ooh! There will be "a" country star singing "a" country hit? How tantalizing!
Why the hell don't Timmy and Van Zant TRY to sing a George Jones hit or Merle Haggard. Its because they can't! Bunch of freak'n sellouts. Ricky Van Shelton can sing 'em all under the table. You too Keith Urban.
[This message was edited by Kevin Hatton on 20 January 2005 at 09:49 AM.]
[This message was edited by Kevin Hatton on 20 January 2005 at 09:50 AM.]
Well, that just opened up a couple more hours of free time I can spend practicing instead of staring at the idiot box and hollering about what I see on it. Thanks for the heads up......
If "C.C.R." & the "Eagles" came out today,they'd be considered Country. Today's "Country" is nothing but 70's "Rock"!
What were you guys expecting? For Ray Price to come out and sing Way To Survive? We can forget that ever happening again.
If "C.C.R." & the "Eagles" came out today,they'd be considered Country. Today's "Country" is nothing but 70's "Rock"!
I've already seen several music sites on the internet that label CCR, The Eagles and other similar bands "country"! Kills me. If nothing else, it does prove that commercial country has evolved into the same sound as the old pop/rock and will probably continue on from the to sounding like the new pop/rock very soon.
Brings up another thing I could never understand. Nearly every honkytonk country band I've ever played with always did a few rock songs such as Sweet Home Alabama, Johnny B. Goode, a little CCR, etc. and seemed to take great delight in showing off they "could rock" too. Many of them also tried to play "jazz" by doing their version of "Hold it". What I don't understand is why these same guys acted like they were really showing off something by doing these rock songs, and then two minutes later were full of put-downs about "hippies" who liked "rock and roll crap" and now it seems "country" is exactly that.....?
i remember when bela fleck was nominated for "best country instrumental" for a kinda celtic/jazz/bluegrass instrumental.
his comment was; "we're still trying to figure out which country."
Now I understand better, how I've been able to cope with sitting at home, without a Gig for the past 5-yrs.! I just needed someone to point out my ‘blessings in disguise’! If I couldn't enjoy what I'd have to play, why play it? Back to the practice-room for me, and I guess that's where I'll stay!
The closest thing to country being represented in the grammies, actually is in the contemperary folk category.
Grammie passed on several years ago. The show is produced by her tone deaf son who relies on his 18 year old daughter to gather a crew of 15 year olds to make the selections.
