Smiley,

''if, after crunching the numbers, it's a good opportunity for Nashville to showcase itself.''

Just goes to show that the big wigs don't give a hoot about anything but money.

They should call it the CMIA Awards--Country Music Impersonation Awards. Moving to New York City? It's FUBAR (fowled up beyond any recognition) anyways, no big loss. I know where to find REAL country music, and it ain't in Nashville any more. SOOO, Mr. DJ, won't you please play, a real country song------------------------------------

Its going to be really embarassing with more pictures like this of our super weenie mayor Bloomberg:
Image

It looks like a political move to get Clearchannel to format pop country music in the massive market that is NYC. There is no corporate country station here at the moment.

I get really pissed off when smirky NYC yuppie scum yell a condesending yee-haw when I'm on the bandstand. There is going to be a bunch of that as well as piles of corporate/political phonies wearing country music clown suits and eating ribs for photo opps. It will be pathetic.

The people I know in NYC love country music. You can hear Hank songs in bars all over the city every night of the week. That has nothing to do with the screwed up corporate scene though.

One good thing is that there will be a bunch of gigs around town for you country road guys. I can hear some great steel playing and show some of you guys what is happening in the clubs of another real music city ! NYC is my favorite place for music in the world. If it wasn't I would move.

What chord is Mayor Bloomberg holding with his left hand in that picture? It looks like he's reaching over the top to fret with his thumb, just like Jimi Hendrix and John McLaughlin used to do. Does he tune ET, or JI?
[This message was edited by David Mason on 06 October 2004 at 01:58 PM.]

Herman has an idea there. Moved to NY, it would be perfect to add another category.

"Hip Hop Country Rap."

All they would need is a heavy drum beat, a loud funky bass, somebody with a deep voice who mumbles a lot and a steel player.

Not that I can think of any steel player who would play that crap.

Maybe it'll help the local musicians playing in clubs there demand more money for plying their trades.

Or it'll just be another reason they will give for working cheaper..

You might say that I don't really have a dog in this fight..

well back about 20 years ago I recall that a movie hit the big screen and folks all over the country started wearing cowboy hats and going to bars to listen to Country music..and learn how to line dance etc..most probably could care less what a Steel Guitar was..who cares..I know I was working 3 or 4 nights a week for years from the fallout.

If CMT moves to NYC for a big show and the Mayor wants to wear a big hat like Tim and Kenny.. and the culture has an opportunity to change even a little..that would be a good thing..

now on the other side if the purpose of this move is to distance Country music from Nashville and connect it more to the current music culture then it will not pass the test of time.

BUT..

If the people ain't comin' to you then you gotta take the show to the people..this may not be a bad thing..unless of course we have 25 Kid Rocks and Kid Rock wanna be's filling the platform.

Is it possible that GAYLORD has learned something from NASCAR ? A couple of CUP cars sittin' out there in Times Square sure didn't hurt them boys...

"Then we can move Country Music back to Nashville" Do you really think Nashville could handle such culture shock??

The things I have read is that the civic movers & shakers of Nashville are embarrassed with the "country music" image and would like to get rid of it!

The same was true in Oklahoma City about 35 years ago, where the same attitude prevailed! Musicians back then knew that if they had any ambitions for success in the music business, the first thing you had to do was go somewhere else.
