Split Cases for Carter D10? Maybe.

Post by Michael Lester »

We recently had occasion to play a dance gathering on the second floor of an Eagles Club building. Two flights of narrow stairs with a small landing. Toting the guitar, pack a seat, amp and another instrument in a case was VERY difficult - especially the Carter. 63 lbs in an awkward, one handed case.

I asked Johnie King if he had run into workable solutions that came from his customers?

One thought he shared was split cases using padded gig bags like those used for keyboards.

Here's what I'm trying...

The original hard case weighs 22lbs.

This keyboard case is reasonably padded and fits well. Total weight in the case is 27.1 lbs.

This tripod carry bag weighs 13.1 lbs. and easily fits the leg bag and the pedal bar. It has a shoulder strap that makes carrying it much easier.

To be sure, this stuff isn't designed for extended road trips or airline. But, to load this onto the bed of an SUV and carry to the stage, I think it will be just fine.
I may add some foam stiffeners depending on how much these stretch after use.

If anyone is interested, these cases came from Amazon - under $100 for both.

I've been using a Gator GP-49 semi-soft keyboard case for the body and an Ambitus tripod case for the pedalbar and legs for at least ten years (another light bag before the Ambitus). I figure that if I get in an accident bad enough for the steel to get damaged, the steel will be the least of my worries. Probably save myself years of back wear and tear.

+1 on the Gator bag.
