How to clean changers and the axle?

Post by Lee Chavez »

Hey gang, I posted about my ‘93 GFI S10 3x3 recently, and have made some progress. Noticed the bridge was abhorrently filthy (along with pull rods and their nylon tuners).

The guitar is sitting completely torn apart right now, but I have each part marked and labeled. I know getting it back together will likely make replacing drum breaks on a car seem like a cake walk, so I didn’t want to totally screw myself at that step.

Also, I searched the forum and google and couldn’t find the answer. Thanks y’all. 🤘🏼

I find that mineral spirits is about as good as anything. Just pour some in a shallow pan of some sort, let the parts soak a while, wipe with a rag. Rinse and repeat. Goof Off is also a handy product to have around, you can find it at most hardware stores probably not too far from the mineral spirits.

I soak everything in a pan of Formula 409 overnight and then wipe each piece down and inspect it. Any necessary scrubbing or polishing can be done free of grease and toxic vapors, and it doesn't attack nylon and plastic parts so they get to swim in the soaking pan too.

There is many common cleaners that are good cleanser, 409, Dawn dish liquid. Spray can starting fluid.
Just a warning, Do not use any cleaner that contains caustics.
Some Carbarator and Brake Cleaners have Caustics in them and will etch polished aluminum parts.
