John Hughey: Best Solos/Parts?

Post by John Larson »

I can't get enough of Vince Gill's "Look At Us". That steel part is so beautiful. What are some other greats in you opinion by John Hughey?
Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous; praise is meet for the upright. Give praise to the Lord with the harp, chant unto Him with the ten-stringed psaltery. Sing unto Him a new song, chant well unto Him with jubilation. For the word of the Lord is true, and all His works are in faithfulness. The Lord loveth mercy and judgement; the earth is full of the mercy of the Lord.
- Psalm 33:1-5

Check out Dickey Betts album entitled Highway Call, and the 14 minute song named Hand Picked.

Look for his solo album "On and off stage". One of the best steel albums ever recorded, but may be hard to find these days.

Conway Twitty's, Lost In The Feeling With You.
I was at a steel show in Washington, Pa. several years ago. At his booth, Someone asked Mr. Huey his favorite song he recorded.
Mr. Huey just grinded and said, "Lost In The Feeling".

Mr. Huey definately has that special Talent that not many have. He brings out the emotion of a song like no other in my opinion. I guess I just like his Attack and Style.

There's an intro/solo that John played on a song that Vince recorded called "A Real Lady's Man". It's probably one of my all-time favorite steel intros/solos The song is featured on Vince's "When Love Finds You" record, which was released in 1994. Even though "Real Lady's Man" wasn't released as a single, it still features great steel by John. I'm a fan of "Lost In The Feeling" too. Another song on Vince's "When Love Finds You" is "Which Bridge To Cross, Which Bridge To Burn" and it also features another great steel solo by John, and in 1992, John also played the intro and solo to "This One's Gonna Hurt You For A Long Long Time", a hit single for Marty Stuart and Travis Tritt in 1992, and then the steel work he did on "Yard Sale" by Sammy Kershaw.

My all time favorite John Hughey is on Vince Gill’s “There’s Not Much Love Here Anymore.” Also check out Ronnie Milsap’s “20-20 Vision” and George Jones’ “Come Home to Me.”

The first John Hughey thing that hit me and made me want to play Steel was on Cal Smiths, Hello Mrs Johnson ... after that would be the intro and break on I've Just Destroyed The World, which I thought was beyond cool.

Lost in the feeling. Sit down and try to copy papa John on that one. I’ve never gotten it down exactly as he did it. Some of the finest pure pedal steel work ever imho.

It's somewhat surprising that John's work on the Time Jumpers CD/DVD Jumpin' Time has yet to be mentioned. Stellar.

Same here!!!

I was one of the hippies working at Bobby's Custom Campers in Manitou Springs, CO circa 1972/73, and the "cowboy" who wired 'em up (when he was sober enough to show up for work) always had KPIK (the local country station) tuned in on his radio. "That sound" in Cal Smith's The Lord Knows I'm Drinking stuck in my head, and a few years later, I purchased a new MSA Red Baron, and was off to the races...

Hughey's playing on to Conway Twitty's "Last Date" is about as iconic as it gets.

This break at the 1:48 mark- see link below. Gives me goosebumps and the yells from the crowd tells us they had them too.
