B minor tuning anyone?

Post by Frank Nims »

Sol Hoopii is great, but I just couldn't seem to "get" his C# Minor tuning. Then I realized it was equivalent to DADF#BD (low to high), almost the same as the open D I know from bottleneck guitar.

Anybody using this, or has tried it?

EDIT! It's B Minor, not Dm. Sorry, force of habit made me call it a D tuning. Got to try & think of it as B.

Hi Frank,

I have messed around with that tuning a bit, usually in the E setting. So it's basically an E major with the second string tuned up to get the sixth, C#.

I found it offers some key advantages. I can play the major/minor pentatonic runs and dobro-like stuff on the bottom four strings, and also use those strings for straight ahead "power" chords.

And the addition of the sixth note on the second string can allow me to get some of the old-school country feel available in a sixth tuning.

I haven't used it much lately, due to what seems like a total lack of tabs in the tuning. I can get around the fretboard okay on it, but it didn't seem like I was growing.

I have since gone back to C6 tuning.

I would be interested to know what music you are playing with the Bm7 tuning, and if you have found sources for tabs.

Thanks John,
I'm still trying to figure put what to do with it, really. Trying to see if thinking of it as B Minor rather than D6 gets the imagination going. And looking for alternatives to what could be done with a bottleneck on regular DADF#AD.

Thans Jouni!
That would be easy to get into from GBDGBD.

This is a pretty common D6 tuning, aka Bm7. Same intervals as E6/C#m7.
Current Tunings:
DADF#AD
DADF#ABD
