Joaquin's first solo is almost note for note off the classic Django Reinhart's recording.

I'm impressed.

I bet lots of Django's solos are transferable with some work. Unlike modern gypsy jazzers he played slower and more melodically rather than chainsaw fast solos.

there are transcriptions of his solos out there. I may try some :)

Sorry, Jim, a computer search for that tab came up dry.

I've never tabbed it out but I have transcribed it. There are two versions where he plays part of the Django chorus. I think Mr Clem has both versions up on his YouTube channel. The unreleased one has the audio dropout (as notated below). But for all the technique and aural skills on display here, I actually prefer the third Plainsmen version which was a McGregor transcription. It's just pure Joaquin and just as good as any Django you can cite, IMO. I don't recall where I obtained it. I don't think it's on YouTube. Might have come from Mitch Drumm. I really should put it up there on YouTube.

Here is my video that has all 3 versions. I believe the version were Joaquin missed a few notes ( Guy notes as audio dropout) was the Tops version. Which was an alternate take from the Coast Records session. Of the three versions The Mac Gregor transcription was likely the first one recorded as they were still called Ozie Waters and the Plainsmen on the disc. Unfortunately the Musicians Unions contracts did not keep records for the Transcription recordings, so the actual date is unknown.

Here’s a YT video I made awhile back playing one of the versions of the solo.

I had not listened to this era of Joaquin in a little while. And man, every time I revisit it it blows my mind again. His tone and note choice are amazing of course. Not as often mentioned, his rhythm and feel are what really takes to the stratosphere.

Nick, great job tackling playing this stuff!
