Replacing pickups?

Post by Tony Harris »

I've been trying to get the perfect sound from my cheap 6-string lap steel by using a POD or rack unit/graphic equalizer etc, without success. I just realised - the sound's NOT IN THERE! When I borrowed an old Fender Stringmaster, there was the sound I was after! Got to finish my recording project quick, before I have to give it back.

Then do you think I should try replacing the cheap pickups on mine (I see Seymour Duncan do 'aged' Stringmaster replacements), or should I save my money and look for the real thing?

Tony,

I got a cheap lap steel that I put a Seymour Duncan Hot Rail into. And now that guitar breaks up nicely when I play hard, and is the perfect tone when I play just normal. The pickup is a single coil style, but two single's stacked on top of each other. It is a great sounding pickup for lap steel.
