My regular instrument is PSG. However, I recently bought a Regal RD45S from a fellow forumite. I've always enjoyed dobro playing and now I have a chance to get back to the roots of country steel guitar playing.
Can anyone recommend some good teaching literature that is currently published. I'm comfortable with picks and bar, so I'm really looking for something on playing techniques (beginner and up). I used to have the dobro book that Stacey Phillips authored published by Oak Publications but loaned it to another aspiring dobro picker that moved away and I don't know if I can ever get it back.
Hey Glenn, thats a coincidence. I did exactly the same thing this week, and got myself the same guitar.
There are two Stacy Phillips books that I know of. The green "Dobro Book" and a much bigger one called "The Complete Dobro Book"
I think Alpha Music on Guadapupe have both of them. I'm sure there are others. In fact I think I'll pop down there afternoon and take a look.

14 strings to 6 isn't a problem. Most of the strings on the "stage yacht" are decorative, anyway.... They're only meant to impress the ladies that like to play "air steel"

If you can find the tape series with tab by Mike Aldrige, that's a great one. I think it's still in print. If not, a lot of video instruction by www.homespuntapes.com they have Jerry Douglas. Or try Malcolm Kirby at strings@apex.net , he has videos by Tim McCasland.
Been doing great. I played a date with Chris Wall last week at the Spoke. He asked me to do the 24th with him next week but I was booked. Just finished a new CD for Mike Graham. We cut it in Port Aransas at Larry Joe Taylor's new studio. I played dobro on one cut, and my Fender triple-8 on another. The rest was PSG. Going to be a great CD. Good to hear from you.
how do you guys like your rd45s? on the advice of a recent post i've been internet shopping for one myself recently. for the money it seems to be the one to go with for a beginner dobie player. what say yee? thanks, will

Will, I haven't really "dug in" too deep with my RD45S yet. But what I have experienced with the guitar is positive. It's construction, appearance, and tone would lead you to believe it's a much more expensive instrument. Being that I'm a neophyte with resophonic guitars I'm not in the position to make comparisons with other high quality instruments. I'll just say I'm very pleased with the RD45S so far. Will, pretty much what Glenn said about the rd45s. I played it Saturday afternoon in an acoustic jam. It certainly had the volume that I was looking for.

Glenn, the tape series I was refering to was the BV-1, 4 tape series. Highly recommended. Of course this is the only one I've had by Mike so I'm sure all of his material is great.

Sometimes I think I am the cheapest little whore in Maryland, but I love it and I'm happy and honored to able to chat occasionally with guys that love the dobro and pedal steel as much as I do.
