Help with recording to Ipad

Post by Ron Whitworth »

Hello All;
I need some help with recording to an Ipad.
I already have the Ipad so I thought I would put it to use recording.
I have a machine that plays my rhythm,drums & bass that I run thru a PA system.
I tried to record to the Ipad just using the internal mic in the room & the drums
just did not come thru loud enough even tho they were turned up pretty loud.
I did some checking around & found that Line 6 makes a device called mobile in.
It will plug into an Iphone or an Ipad & has 2 inputs on it. I want to take a line out
from my PA so I can get the drums loud enough along with bass,rhythm & vocals
(all of this will be coming out of the PA going into the Ipad via the mobile in ).
What recording program can I use to do this with?
I keep hearing about Garage Band..
It looks to me that is what you would want to use if you did not have any back up music but I do have that & I want to use what I have.
Is there another recording program that would work better for what I need??
What would you recommend I use?
Thanks for any help you can give me.
Ron

Garage Band is highly rated. I think you can record from an external device to Garage Band.

There are several companies that make iPad recording interface devices. Peavey makes one, as does others.

Hello Jack;
Yes there are several devices made for recording into an Ipad - correct. This is the one I bought.

If this is true then I can use it >

I just did not know as the instructions in garage band make it sound as if you have to use their backup rhythms.
IF I can bypass all of their built ins & use my own then it will work for me. I just wanted to be sure before I bought their program.
Thanks for your help Jack.
I appreciate that.

I got the new one for older guys like me called Messy Garage Band. You plug in any guitar or steel and it routs you through the mess to the right channel and EQ's it perfectly, if you make a mistake it corrects it and if you can't sing it puts on a fine vocal ... don't I wish. :)

Last Saturday I went to the apple store. took a class on Garageband. It's easy to use....and it was free! If you have a store around, look to the website under "Genius" for a class. I also have the Line 6 mobile in. Just picked it up.....haven't had time to use it. Earl

I recently picked up the Peavey iPad/iPhone interface. It was the "stupid deal of the day" at Musician's Friend. I haven't tried it yet, but will sometime.

I have a full blown home studio with Sonar X2 software and a Roland Octa-Capture interface unit.

Ron, In Garageband got to Instruments and select Audio Recorder (The Microphone Icon) Then just connect your mixer through the Stereo Jack on your Mobile interface. You don't need to use their backing tracks...
