Fender 1000 manual and question

Hello all,

I'm a new member, but have been reading the forum for a while for all the great info. This is a great resource. I've got a Stage One that I absolutely love, an old Clark D-10 that I love to death, and just acquired an early 60s Fender 1000 (short scale with black cast pedals) that is no end of fun but is disgustingly dirty and grimed up with what seems to be literally about 50 years of oil and nicotine buildup. So I am in the process of carefully taking it apart and cleaning everything from the bottom up. I am wondering if anyone has a PDF or something of the old 1000 manual that they might share? I have seen a few older posts with links to a download, but those don't seem to work anymore.

Also, when I get further along, I was planning on pulling the changer and cleaning it. I have to admit I am not quite sure how that thing works. I pulled apart my Clark and put it back together without problem. But this Fender is a bit opaque to me. How difficult is that changer to take apart and put back together? Any advice?

Just out of curiosity, this manual is for the older stamped-pedal version. Was it basically the same as the later cast-pedal version that I have? The pictures of the changer look different from what I've got going on here.

The changer is the same internally. On the outside, the springs are longer on the bottom, and the strings feed differently (backwards) on top, where round-top fingers replace the old bent hooks for the string ends. This allowed the elimination of the changer rollers, which were initially a retrofit for the (first design) straight bar bridge.

What would the string gauges be?

I don't think the manual will be too crucial in taking it apart and putting it back together. I took my fender completely apart back when I knew nothing and got it going again better than before.

Most pedal steels have a sort of symbiotic thing going on where you really need to time everything together and leave slack here and there. The Fenders are very intuitive and pretty much impossible to screw up unless you break something. Even then you can do things like steal the hooks with barrels from unused parts inside the changer area if you need them.

The trickiest part is getting the changer mounted back in so that it moves back and forth like it should. You'll know when you get it right though, and you'll see that you don't have to backtrack at all. Good luck

If you're planning on tearing it totally down, I'd strong recommend buying a cheap harbor freight ultrasonic cleaner and use that with a little bit of simple green and distilled water in lieu of naptha. I took apart a 400 recently and it cut down the resto time dramatically, and was able to do it in the house with no issue.
