Tascam Products

Post by Stephen Abruzzo »

Thinkin' about getting a TASCAM recorder and was wondering if any of you might be able to share some light on a subject I know nothing about.

What do I need? I would only be recording myself on lap steel (electric but maybe acoustic too) and probably recording over a backing track?

I just looked over the TASCAM website and the different recorders/playstations is numbing.

Thanks.

Hi Stephen, I had a Tascam 2488, and it worked great. You won't need anything else, that I can think of right now, (it's 4 am).Good luck with it. You'll spend a lot of hours having fun, with which ever one you purchase. Larry

I have used Tascam products for the last 20 years - from 4 track reel to reel, to a PortaStudio 424 (4 track cassette - I still use it off and on for transfering older masters to digital) to my Tascam DP-01FX - 8 track hard drive digital recorder. The DP-01 has effects build in and works great. I use band in the box for most of the background tracks - record those in the DP-01 and then add the other tracks (Synth, guitar, steel, vocals) later. I end up with some nice clean tracks. The DP-01 I have allows you to output a master as a wave file to your computer. The newer version of the DP-01 has a built in CD burner so you can go to CD from the device - they came out with that version about a month after I bought mine! Tascam also makes the 24 track version - a lot of bang for your buck.

For recording acoustic instruments get a couple nice condensor mikes. I use MXL condensors that are phantom powered by the DP-01. Most of the Tascam machines have phantom power and built-in effects. I usually add a noise gate with acoustic instruments.

Hope that helps

I too have been very pleased with Tascam products, very easy to use and fine quality. I can't say I have ever had a product fail and I have had many... That being said..I am also very high on the Boss and ZOOM products..once you pick a price range either can fit the bill but do check out the Zoom R8 and maybe the R16..they may also be something worthy of a look.

Price range will be very important...check out all the net stores for whats available in your price range...
