Behringer UPHONO UFO202 USB Audio Interface

Has anyone tried this for direct recording to computer? I'm using a Behringer V Amp2 for a headphone amp that has a plugin for a CD player for playing with tracks. What I hear in my headphones is good enough for what I want, but I want to record it to listen to my mistakes for self improvement.Looks like it may work for what I need, there are three different models that appear to be basically the same except for a slight difference in price....Bill

I don't know about XP but if you have Vista or Windows 7 it should be automatically detected and installed by Windows when you plug it in.

Then if your recording program has source (input) selection options you can select this device as the recording source.

Ups just delivered it about an hour ago, I'll try it sometime tomorrow, don't have time right now, Church night.

BTW I changed my mind and got the red one UCA222.

Jack,
I tried it ,BUT!!!...the instrument input is a couple of milliseconds behind the track audio. Is there a way to sync. this? It seems to be working OK, except for that, just need to get the right levels on everything. As far as the sound, if it sounds as good on CD, I will be very pleased.
BTW, I had this problem when I went direct into the line in on my laptop, this is why I went with the interface.

Thanks...Bill

Reason for leaving previous post, if someone has the same problem I had.
Downloaded drivers from Ber. website, working really good, everything in sync..

Now, all I need is to familiarize the workings/vol settings, good to go.

Larry, go to the website, and get drivers, also line out from V-amp to line in on interface, usb into computer, change input on computer to Ber. unit.If that doesn't work..let me know, maybe I/Jack can help.

I have one of those. I haven't used it a whole lot but it seems to work ok and the price was right.
the instrument input is a couple of milliseconds behind the track audio
Yes, the dreaded "latency" problem. One good reason why so many go with a dedicated recorder despite the attractions of using a computer. It gets discussed a lot.

One interesting fact is that sound travels through air at right about 1000 feet per second, so a 10 ms lag is like being 10 feet away from someone you're playing with, which isn't uncommon. A few milliseconds shouldn't be much of a problem but 50 or 100 ms is.
just need to get the right levels on everything.
Design flaw or feature, you decide, but there's no level or gain control between the box's input and the analog-to-digital converter. That means you need to control the input level some other way before it gets to the interface to get a reasonable signal level without clipping.

That's different from what most of us are used to with computer sound cards, where there's usually an on-screen control that sets recording level. I'm always coming from something with an output level control or going through some kind of preamp, and the stuff I'm using is probably better than whatever circuit they could have added inside a $30 box. It hasn't been a problem once I learned why it's that way.

Seems they spend most of the money on a pretty decent converter chip, which makes sense to me. It does what it does and overall I'm happy to have it around.

Tim,
I am using Ripvinyl now, it has a vue meter of sorts. Easy to read, also with what I'm doing it's good enough for now. Once I get the input volume set, it's just a matter of being too loud for the tracks, or not loud enough. I use Audacity for "dressing" tracks we record at Church for those that prefer CDs, probably will use it ,if this project ever gets off the ground. . The UCA222.comes with a couple of CDs with drum tracks, etc, etc. Don't want to get too deep for now.

Did I mention that I need to practice a lot? Well, I really need to practice a lot.

Thanks for all the help everybody. and Merry Christmas..Bill

Bill:

I've got a UFO 202--the silver one in your original picture.

I've been using it about 6 months will great success.

I use it as replacement for the soundcard on my PC motherboard.

Here's some of the stuff I do with it:

I can plug a cassette deck directly into it (by passing my home stereo entirely) and copy cassette tapes onto my PC for later transfer to CD.

I can run a standard RCA cable from the Behringer unit outputs to my home stereo system and play my mp3 collection directly from my PC through my best speakers.

I could (but haven't yet) plugged my turntable into it and recorded vinyl LP to my PC--just like I've already done with my cassette deck.

Maybe the best part: if you run a standard short RCA cable from the Behringer outputs to the inputs, you can force Windows 7 to record (through Audacity) whatever you happen to be listening to on your PC at the moment---even though Windows 7 doesn't normally like to do that. It wasn't such a hassle on XP or Vista, but this gets around any problems.

Signal to noise ratio seems very good--I haven't noticed any hum or quality issues.
