Mitch Jayne of the Dillards/Darlings

Mitch Jayne bass player, story teller & MC in The Dillards (or the Darlings on Andy Griffith show), passed away yesterday, Aug 2.
He just turned 80 last month and was diagnosed with cancer.

He also wrote a couple of good books, "Homegrown Stories and Home Fried Lies" and "Fiddler's Ghost". Those books concern the Ozarks, where I am from. "Homegrown" is very funny.

An American humorist who deserves a place next to Mark Twain, H.L. Mencken, Garrison Keillor or anyone else you care to name. Never mind that he also played bass in one of the two best and most creative bluegrass bands ever. (I say this as a bluegrass radio show host for 20 years and from what I've seen and heard, apart from the traditionalists--separate category--The Dillards are rivaled only by the Seldom Scene. Mitch jamming with John Duffey-can you imagine?)

The world is a grayer place now.

Having been a long-time Dillards follower, it's very sad to hear of Mitch's passing. Each had a unique talent to add to the mix and Mitch's story telling was superb, especially when he asked Rodney to "give us the Look". Seems like hundreds of years ago with the Mitch, Rodney, Doug, then Herb and Dean along with Buddy Emmons got me turned onto Bluegrass with the Steel Guitar. Don't tell that b0b that banjos and steel not only get along but sound great together. May Mitch rest in peace.

This is really a shock. Mitch was such a fine fellow. I've got his books, in fact I bought five copies to give to friends of the "Home Fried Lies". I knew he was up there in years, and always hoped I'd work a show with him. Worked shows with Doug, Rodney, and Dean in the passed, but Mitch was always somewheres else. Got a letter from him once encouraging me to write my humorous articles. That was really a great thing for me. Rest in peace Mr. Jayne. Your work on earth is done.
