Some songs from home produced CD...

Post by Brian McGaughey »

I'd like to share some of the songs from our new CD. I played drums, steel, co-produced and mixed this disc. It was recorded and mixed on a KORG 3200 using chinese condensers for voice. Mastered at The SoundLab at DiscMakers.

For steel, listen to Never Said Goodbye, Paradise and Class Reunion (actually those are the only cuts WITH steel).

Let me know what you think. Really. Especially you guys who do this for a living. I can take it. :)

Hey Brian...

I just listened to a few songs, I'll listen to a few more later time permitting. I thing you did a great job on the music production, and I was wondering how well they did the mastering at SoundLab. Having not heard the before version, the mastering sounds pretty good.

Are these original songs?, written by whom? If so double Kudos.... Good material.

In my opinion, this is a great project CD especially for having been done at home. The perfect CD for selling at gigs, etc. The only points that I would consider weak would be the vocals. There doesn't seem to be a defining presence male or female or both as the lead vocal. It sorta sounds like several people trying to front the group either by taking turns or singing all at once. No real strong vocal quality or presence. Nothing bad mind you, just not real impressive on the vocals.

I've grown a thick skin, so I hope I don't come across as too harsh. It may be just my opinion, and it is a great effort for a home recording. Play a commercial CD from the same genre, then play yours behind it, and I think you'll see what I mean.

I might be a beginner now, but someday I'm gonna steel the show.

I'm thick skinned! 8)

Indeed, the vocals aren't first rate. Neither singer is "front" quality and they'll be the first to agree. It seems to work best when they front together or sing a duet such as "Class Reunion".

The songs are original, some written by my co-producer and bass player, some by the female vocalist and a couple by me. The main push behind the CD was to get the songs themself out.

My take: although it may not be of a quality that keeps up with modern recordings of the genre, I was tickled with the outcome...it was better than I had hoped for.

Sound Lab saved our *ss by catching all the sub-bass I'd missed in the control room (bedroom!). It's like they took the plastic wrap off the speakers. They also followed orders and didn't compress or limit the mix, only increased overall level so as to leave some dynamics.

Thank for your comments, Robert.
