Need Help on Recrding

I am hoping someone out there can help me. I want to record myself playing using backing tracks and my computer, I have CUBASE LE4 and I have a PV 6 mixer. I hope I am making sense here.

Howard, this is a wide open question which basically cannot be answered in simple terms.

Do you have recoding experience?

Cubase and a mixer ?

Do you know how to use Cubase ?
Did you setup your soundcard? Does the soundcard interface accept analog inputs ( guitar signal)
What media format are your tracks ?
midi, wave, CD, MP3 ?

The easy short answer is that if you have Cubase setup with an analog interface for your PC, then you must get your tracks into Cubase either in wave , MP3 or MIDI format. Once they are in Cubase, you play the file,( one per song ) plug your Steel into the PC interface ( not PV mixer) and record your Steel to a new track in Cubase.

there's a lot to this just to get a 2 minute song at the end of the process !

I use Cubase Essential 4 and a digital interface connected to my computer.
as Tony says, there isn't a one line answer.
I am an analog dinosaur, but am getting a knack for digital.
I understand that sometimes one needs some experience in order to ask the question.

Thanks guys I really appreciate your help but I guess what I am really after is do I need other or different equipment and or software. I don't have alot of money to spend on it so I am lookig for the best and cheapest way to do it.

Howard, if you are PC recording , the minimum is

PC
Software ( which you have )
Interface for the PC which accepts an analog signal
(Guitar signal)

That is the absolute minimum.

my start was tenuous, as I wasn't sure i could get the results I wanted from desk top recording. I began with a nice computer, an inexpensive digital interface, which came with the basic Cubase software. with a pair of monitors or head phones I was good to go.

Ok guys I know I am being a pain in the butt, I have decided to use and older desktop for my recording purpose. I have the M-audio 2496 sound card installed. Now what I want to know is how do I hook up my steel. I also have a Peavey PV6 mixer and I also have a pair of speakers to use as monitors. What type of cables do I need and do I need anything else to make this work.

ow. I sat down and had a pain...so I thought I'd better check here.
you are not a pain. getting things started has always been a steep curve for me, so I understand.
soundcards if I rememeber have the eigth inch port. so you need a cord that fits in there. the sound card is connected to the Peavey mixer. now those usually have quarter inch. so your cord has to havre to different sized ends.
you plug your steel into the mixer.
now all the connections are made.
next, you need to have the soundcard identified by Cubase. I think under Preferences you will find the pull down menu. located the soundcard and click it.
you should be good to go.

I am pretty sure of this, but hopefuklly another poster will, correct or verify.
you are getting close. hang in there.

As I too, am making the transition from analog to digital recording, here are some links that can be quite helpful in sorting out your PC or laptop, to optimize them for the best performance.

First, this handy little Latency Checker utility:

Put that little guy on your desktop for EZ access.
It will help A LOT, if you use an optimization guide for your PC/laptop such as this for Vista:
