Standard for Levers

Is there a generally agreed upon standard for the name of the levers on a pedal steel? I mean, we know what the A, B, and C pedals do on most steels. What about the levers? D,E,F,G?

There is some variation among the players in knee lever letters. Most players agree that the letter F indicates raise E to F. Beyond that it's a little hazy.

Below are the letter designations that I use, and I believe that the majority of players use them, although some players like to use E for the E lowers and D for the D# to D lever.

E = lower D# to D
F = raise E to F
G = raise F# to G

EE = lower D# to C# (double lower)

Thanks for the answer. While we're at it, would you mind if I send you a TablEdit file I'm starting on for Away In A Manger? I'm only a few measures into it but I'm getting some notes that are out of key - even though I think I've put them in correctly. Does TablEdit play back MIDI correctly on pedal steel tunes like it does on other instruments? Or is it mainly for reading and printing? I know you worked with Mattieu a lot on the pedal steel part so I thought you might know what's going on with my tune.

Gary,

In the Pedal Steel Guitar mode, TE does not always play multiple pitch changes correctly in the MIDI. Certain combinations of knee lever and pedal changes played simultaneously will not sound right.

For example, something like this might not sound right:

5 - 5D
5A - 5

If you have entered the letters and the pitch change values correctly, but the MIDI sounds weird on certain changes, omit the slide lines and the MIDI should play fine. Add the slide lines in for printing, even if the MIDI sounds wrong in some places.

Here is my version of Away In A Manger. I will email you the .tef file for this so you can hear the MIDI. It sounds fine in this arrangement.

Again, if the the MIDI doesn't sound right, omit the slide lines for "listening" and add them in for "printing" db

Thanks for the help. For the sake of everyone else, the problem was that I started my tab on the wrong string. 3 instead of 4. Dumb move on my part. I was only doing the melody down one string so it wasn't obvious that I had started in the wrong place until I started adding the harmony notes.
