Franklin Has the ringing zingys!

Post by Bob Snelgrove »

Put new NYXL strings and the high notes, 3,4, 2, 1 have the most irritating ringing oscillation that is unbearable! the guitar is very bright (chrome 705's) but this is crazy. I don't have any spare strings at the moment but maybe it's bad strings? I have used the same brand for q while but something is very wrong, tries with different amps/speakers no difference,

Here is a demo but much worse live, the phone doesn't pick up the terrible overtones.

1st example is string 3, does the same thing all up the fretboard, not just at fret 12.

Apparently you have to be a Google member to access the clip.
Many play better than I do. Nobody has more fun.

Here are a few short youtube clips. In real life the high overtones are much worse!

Could be a groove on the axle. Check for that. Sometimes I put a drop of oil under the string and that has helped as well. Maybe a bad batch of strings??

Mark, where exactly do you put the oil?

Tried that, Ricky, no better. Anything else that would cause that? I guess I need to try some other strings.

Grooves on top of the changer fingers. If the string is sitting in the groove, try moving it out to an un-grooved part of the finger and see if the zing goes away. If it does, then you have the tricky job of removing the groove.

Have you checked your nut rollers to make sure they are turning smoothly? If they are not, a little Tri Flow or light oil on the axle between the rollers might help. It also helps to rotate them on the axle when you change strings.

When that happens to me ot always ends up being about the nut, I usuallly loosen the strings and rotate the rollers and it settles down. Good luck, it's crazy making stuff.

It could be grooves in the changer fingers.
It may be, Just the age of your strings. I have been having trouble with the 3rd and 4th strings also. It seems some bad tempered .014 4th string wire and .011 string wire has got out on the market. The string metal is work hardening where it crosses the changer fingers, With the 4th E string being both raised and lowered it is the string that goes bad first. The strings will start picking up off the finger. And the weird overtones sound start appearing.
Changing the 4th and 3rd string, Or change whole set is the only cure I have found.
Good Luck in finding the problem, Happy Steelin.

Try damping the springs with foam or cloth or even your finger to see if that is your source. I had a Fessy that required wraps on the return springs to silence them, I used unheated shrink-tube but I imagine a piece of gaffer tape would work as well
