Tim,

Assuming you're asking about an interface for inputing multiple signals (low and high impedance) into your PC there are several ways to go. The 3 that come to mind are:

PCI sound card with cable breakout box

Firewire bus unit that connects to firewire input on PC

USB bus unit that connects to USB input on PC

All three of these methods will allow for multiple simultaneous inputs and midi I/O.

I have a M-Audio Firewire 18/14 unit I bought from Bob Martin who posts around these parts. I also use BIAB and Sonar. There are a lot of ways to get the job done of getting musical signals into a PC so I'm sure some else will weigh in on this.

I spent a lot of time on MusiciansFriend.com, GuitarCenter.com etc, etc to figure it out to the point where I knew what would work for me.

Good luck!

Hey Guy's if you get tired of programming and want to have great sounding drum tracks. Email me and I will send you some music samples of real drums with a real drummer recorded on the popular Nashville Radar system. We can do all styles great country drums yes you can send use your tracks and have custom drums with the exact feel you want. If you are on a budget I understand trying to program your own tracks but it's so time consuming. If you want more info contact Shane at www.in-houserecording.com

Hey Brian, dog gone it I hope you're doing good! I haven't heard from ya in a while. I hope that interface and the software is still working good :-). It was good to see your post.....

As far as the interfaces to get audio into a computer I think you covered it all:-) You mentioned all of the best ways and any of them will work just fine depending on his needs of course I'm not meaning you I'm just trying to help the original poster that you replied to.

I think firewire is the best bet and now they have firewire 2 or what ever they call it actually I believe they call it firewire 800 and obviously it's suppose to be twice as fast as the original firewire which is 400 kbps.

Now after saying that I don't think FW-800 is actually 2 times as fast as FW-400 and of course I'll expound on that :-) You will need to check it out for yourselves but in my tests I never came close to getting 800 kbps out of FW2. I only got marginally faster throughput than FW-400 actually I was only able to achieve 290 to 320 kbps with FW-400 and 500 to 680 kbps throughput with FW-800. Which says to me that neither one is giving us the bandwidth that it advertises but thats not any surprise :-) Because with USB-2 all I've ever been able to achieve is around 300 to 380 kbps and of course they advertise speeds up to and even above 400 kbps. So actually speed is very relative to each user and their system some will be faster than mine and some will be slower.

But keep this in mind 10 to 12 kbps ie (USB-1) is still fast enough to stream 44.1 hz @ 16 bit stereo in and out of most modern systems without any problems. Now please don't jump on me and say my system wont do that because I do know every system is different so your mileage may vary.......

As the last addendum to my post I would say that everyone should try different interfaces from a music store that will let you return the gear if you don't like it, such as an e-tailer like musicians friend or sweetwater or zzounds, actually most on line retailers will offer a try for a few weeks before you can't return. Now with that said most big box stores such as Guitar Center here in Nashville or Sams Music will honor returns as long as you are not a habitual abuser of returning purchases. I have bought many items from both stores here in Nashville so please try some of the ways :-)I hope this will help somebody because my fingers are sore from typing LOL!!!!!!

Hey Bob,

Things are good out here in the Northwest right now. 85 degrees plus!

The 1814 has worked out great, although most of my engineering time has been spent on a Korg 3200. We use that because it's easy to transport to the 3 different locations we're recording at. A powerful unit for the dough.

I see your posts and then you're gone for awhile, hope all is alright with you.

I'd worry about hijacking this thread but then I see YOU started it in 2006!

Howdy Brian, you don't ever have to worry about hijacking one of my posts :-) You're my pal and I don't care how relevant someones post may be to my original post as long as it's positive and informative hehe.

You're a good pal and a great guy to do biz with and I'm so happy that you have enjoyed the 1814. I always wonder when I sell something if the buyer has used it or sold it. In your case it looks like you have used it some at least and that's great. Keep in touch pal....

Don,

I'm not sure. I've got a very OLD version of BIAB (without real drums) and have been procrastenating about updating for a year now...Perhaps start a new thread? Lot's of folks use BIAB.

Hey Don, in the new version of biab 2008.5 there are good shuffles with real drums and they sound great. I'm sorry this went so long without an answer but I just haven't checked this area in a while :-)
