Obviously your amplification chain can be adjusted to sound really great to your ear with the George L. I would suspect that if you were locked on a desert island with an Alumitone, you could probably find a way to avoid quitting steel guitar.Seriously, I have tried both these and each time found myself severely disappointed, and replacing my George L which to my ears is equal or not better than these newbies. I wonder what the next pricy pickup will be called??
For me the Alumitone does stuff in the upper lengths of the fat strings that my George L wasn't doing as well, but unless there's something wrong with your amplification, if you're not getting a really pleasing tone out any one of about 15 pickups - it ain't the pickup.
If a pickup has too many highs, use a higher capacitance cable than a George L. Or a bass speaker. Or put a blanket on your amp....
