A wound time can't erase- stonewall jackson.. steel player?

Post by Bob Carlucci »

Heard it on Willie's Roadhouse, and just loved the sound of the steel.. I know its pretty old, but hope someone might know the player and what kind of steel he might have been playing... bob

Bill Johnson was the steel guitarist on that record. Bill also wrote the song, and he was also a steel guitarist for Marty Robbins. It sounds to me that he got a lot done.

I saw Bill Johnson on a package show in about 1961. I can't recall who he was working with, but he was playing a Fender 1000 at that time. I know his playing that night really inspired me. The cut of 'Wound' sounds like it was probably that guitar.

Yes, the studio cut,.. There is a live version on YT with the steel player playing a Bud, but I wasn't crazy about that one.. When I heard this song yesterday, it just sounded to me a lot like a Fender cable job, but on those early 60's recordings the Fender and Bud pedal steel guitars were both in a similar zone sonically, at least to my ears, and most everyone used Fender amps in those days, so it had "that" sound, and every time I hear it, I take notice.. In any case, just classic vintage pedal steel , and I wish we had more of it these days.

Thanks all for letting me know about Bill Johnson.. very talented dude actually, Good country singer, writer , as well as steel player for several big country artists back in the day, not to mention movie star good looks as a young man.. Found a VERY cool video of Bill singing and playing a Fender acoustic, and Marty Robbins playing pedal steel with him!.. Playing the steel very well as a matter of fact!...
