Steel Player on Indiana
Recipient of a new surround system and been airing it out on SteelRadio.org on Roku Audacy.
Great stuff there. Some of the programs are narrated or DJ'ed but others are not and some of the players are instantly recognizable, but I didn't start getting really involved with steel until the 70's so I can't ID some of these.
One particular cut of Back Home Again in Indiana just blew me away. Long shot, I know cause there must be a thousand steel instrumentals of this but this one is amazing. Has some bass solos. I can't tell if it's pedals, but I don't think so.
If anyone can tell me who it is, I'd like to find it and add it to my library. Thanks.

I’m not sure which arrangement you’re looking for, but when I worked with Herby Wallace he always had “Indiana” on our set list. And every version had something special in it. Check youtube or google Herby Wallace “Back home again in Indiana”. Even if it’s not the version you’re looking for it’s still some amazing playing!! Herby was a monster player!
St. Blues 1984 "Holy Grail"
Take the time to introduce someone young to music... and play a few songs with someone old.

Thanks David. Yes, I'm familiar with Herby's cover of this tune. Seen and heard him play it many times. Herby was a hoss, yes, but that's not it.
I guess it's too broad to nail down as there are so many recordings of it. I knew it was a long shot anyway.
I would guess it's from somebody like Joaquin Murphey, maybe Koefer. Brighter tone more than mellow though with some really hot licks.
I'll just keep poking around....maybe I'll come across it someday.

I was going to mention that album. I had a copy years ago but unfortunately it went missing in a move. The whole album is great listening.Jack Hanson wrote:Doug Jernigan knocks Indiana out of the park on Vassar Clements' Hillbilly Jazz album.

I appreciate all the response, but as I stated earlier it's not any of those, though they all be great.
Probably some obscure thing lost in the weeds. I bet someone associated with steelradio.org will know the one if they happen to look in here.
Many tunes are almost the same but different titles....it could even be one of those things. Thx.

Hey Doug. It's no big deal. I'm just going to marinate on it for a few days and see if anything else pops up.
I've been aware of Steelradio.org for a while but just really started listening to any degree lately. Great range of eras and styles of steel guitar including dobro, country music, bluegrass and everything else. Lots of it before my time or before I knew who they were or how to find out.

Jerry,
I know you mentioned that you didn't think it was John Hughey, but here's a live version of John playing "Back Home in Indiana" that might be the one you heard...
"Vince Gill - Danny Gatton - Albert Lee - American Music Shop (1993) Full Show"

At about 21:29, John Hughey knocks "Back Home in Indiana" out of the park!
