Die With A Smile cover

Post by André Sommer »

Hi all,
I was recently asked to play a cover called "Die With A Smile" (originally recorded by Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga) live on Dutch national radio. There is no pedal steel guitar on the original so I did what I thought sounded right. This clip has been viewed on YouTube over 53.000 times. Hope you like it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jeWuPVU ... lCN4AaABAg

Nice, Andre - very talented group! I was hoping you’d take a solo but … what I heard was perfect for the song. Well done!

Thanks, Frank! This band is not a regular band but composed of individual musicians for this occasion and except for the singer, I met them an hour before this live broadcast.

There's no solo in the original version but I did play the theme starting at 2:55 but it's mixed a bit soft.

Anyway, this was a fun project to do and according to YouTube alone, this clip has been viewed over 83.000 times to date. The comments are very positive and some people even mentioned my pedal steel guitar contribution like this one: "Shoutout to Mr. Sommer on Pedal Steel! Who woulda thought those swells and slides would add so much character and to this rock ballad; I could really just "Die with a Smile" ! such a Nice Touch and sound to the song. It itched a part of my mind I didn't know that needed itching, but glad it did anyways ;)

Thank you for capturing a soul-soothing(dulcet) sounding and passionate lense of such song. deeply moved and impressed."

I think it's cool that people are being exposed to the possibilities of this instrument. We also played a recently released single by this duo (I played on the original recording) called "Heavy" which is more of a popcountry song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f4b7SPI6di0

Thanks again for your reaction!
